Jacob Gamble, Principal at Cowen Partners and Head of Steward, the firm’s family office practice, was featured in Crain Currency in a piece on one of the most underestimated threats to a family office: what happens when the one person who runs the investments walks out the door.
In the article “The one-person family office: what breaks when the CIO walks out the door,” writer Marcus Baram explores how lean, single-decision-maker shops are exposed when a CIO departs, taking a decade of context and reasoning with them. Jacob’s contribution focuses on the fix.
His advice to families is to embrace the star hire but move quickly to mitigate the downside.
As he tells Crain Currency, it’s perfectly fine to hire the best CIO your budget will allow, but on day one, that person has to start transferring their knowledge to paper, including the investment process, the manager-selection logic, and the reasoning behind each decision.
With dictation tools and an analyst working under the CIO, he notes, the task is easier than it’s ever been.
The deeper point Jacob makes is that naming a successor accomplishes little if the reasoning behind years of decisions lives nowhere. He encourages families to memorialize everything “as if you’re going to have your own presidential library someday,” turning institutional knowledge into an asset of the family rather than the individual.
That, he adds, takes governance as much as documentation, including clear rules on who can write checks and at what size, so the office keeps running even when the CIO is away.
