In the article “Robinhood CFO hands off PAO role,” CFO Dive’s Maura Webber Sadovi reports that finance chief Shiv Verma has delegated his principal accounting officer responsibilities to Dara Bazzano, the company’s first Chief Accounting Officer. Shawn provided the context on why moves like this are becoming more common.
His read is that the CFO role has continued to evolve into a more strategic one, with the finance chief acting as a partner to the CEO and board.
As that forward-looking mandate expands, accounting and reporting responsibilities are increasingly delegated to a PAO, CAO, or controller. Combining the CFO and PAO roles remains common in smaller or less complex organizations, Shawn noted, but separating them becomes more logical as a company grows or faces greater regulatory complexity.
Importantly, Shawn framed Robinhood’s decision not as the CFO shedding an unimportant duty, but as the company recognizing that accounting leadership and strategic finance have each become substantial, specialized roles in their own right. The move followed a similar one at Starbucks earlier in the month, signaling a pattern rather than a one-off.
