Fortune turned to original research from Cowen Partners Executive Search for an article examining a question that surfaces constantly in our search work but rarely gets quantified: how much time does corporate America have before its top leaders start retiring all at once?

More than 40% of the CEOs we studied are 60 or older, a quarter of CFOs are within five years of retirement, and in roughly a third of companies, both roles fall inside the retirement window at the same time. That overlap is the real risk, leaving an incoming CEO without a finance chief who knows the board, the business, or how decisions get made.
