Cowen Partners in the Financial Times - Top CFO Search Firm

Carriers Hit Left & Right with C-Suite Changes

Several carriers have experienced turnover of C-suite leadership in the past five months as executives seek work-life balance, face termination, or retire.

Part of the turnover can be attributed to demographics, with several executives nearing retirement. But another factor is a pandemic-driven shift in values toward less stressful careers.

“We’re dealing with a lot of baby boomers that are retiring [and] that had delayed retirement through the pandemic,” said Shawn Cole, president and co-founder of Cowen Partners, a national executive search and consulting firm. “Many executives that are retiring — including CEOs — are just exhausted from the last few years.”

In addition, a “corporate atmosphere” is not necessarily a good fi t for people searching for better work-life balance, he said. A number of executives across industries have turned to consulting after leaving their positions.

Finally, Cole added economic uncertainty — driven by nagging inflation, high interest rates and questions about growth — could be prompting businesses and their boards to reevaluate company leadership.
